چکیده

Research has shown that historical levels of slavery have an adverse impact on contemporary economic development in the U.S., including income inequality and education. This paper assesses the relationship between slavery and intergenerational mobility, both in the past and at present. We first use the IPUMS Linked Representative Samples between 1860-1910 to show two things: 1) intergenerational mobility is lower in slave states versus free states and 2) the black-white difference in mobility is higher in slave states versus free states. We then merge historical data on slave density (slaves/population) with the contemporary intergenerational mobility data from Chetty, Hendren, Kline, and Saez (2014) to show that the two results still hold, even after controlling for income inequality, education, and a battery of other controls. Our results suggest the legacy of slavery continues to be felt in the U.S. today. JEL Classification:

Intergenerational Mobility in Australia

Combining four surveys conducted over a forty year period, I calculate intergenerational earnings elasticities for Australia, using predicted earnings in parents’ occupations as a proxy for actual parental earnings. In the most recent survey, the elasticity of sons’ wages with respect to fathers’ wages is around 0.2. Comparing this estimate with earlier surveys, I find little evidence that inte...

Intergenerational Income Mobility among Daughters in the United States

The empirical literature on intergenerational income mobility in the United States has focused predominantly on sons. This paper partly redresses that imbalance by using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to investigate intergenerational mobility among daughters. We find that intergenerational transmission of income status is somewhat weaker for daughters than for sons, but is still q...

Health System Reform in the United States

In 2010, the United States adopted its first-ever comprehensive set of health system reforms in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Implementation of the law, though politically contentious and controversial, has now reached a stage where reversal of most elements of the law is no longer feasible. The controversial portions of the law that expand affordable health insurance coverage to most U.S. cit...

Making Research Matter; Comment on “Public Spending on Health Service and Policy Research in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States: A Modest Proposal”

We offer a UK-based commentary on the recent “Perspective” published in IJHPM by Thakkar and Sullivan. We are sympathetic to the authors’ call for increased funding for health service and policy research (HSPR). However, we point out that increasing that investment – in any of the three countries they compare: Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom– will ipso facto not necessarily lea...

Intergenerational Mobility in the United States

Young men today have lower incomes than their fathers' generation did at a similar age. 1 Further, many measures of income inequality in the United States have been growing for over twenty years. Both of these phenomena raise significant questions about a broader issue: the extent of social and economic opportunities available in today's society. Generational income comparisons or statistics on...
